As part of our third grade Social Studies curriculum, students are asked to learn about Michigan geography. Students need to be able to recognize the unique features of Michigan as well as different states that surround us. One big piece that comes along with this is being aware of the 5 Great Lakes. Our class learned a song using the acronym HOMES to help us remember the names of the Great Lakes.
H: Huron
O: Ontario
M: Michigan
E: Erie
S: Superior
Students even went onto analyze the shapes of each Great Lake, and they were asked to use their creativity to turn a Great Lake into a different object or thing. They did an awesome job, they were so creative!
The last project that the students completed was the at home project. Students worked at home with their families to create a Michigan Map meeting certain criteria of Michigan geography. This project pushed students to use their creativity to come up with original ideas! Their creations were outstanding! I was blown away.
After bringing the maps into school, students then taught a different third grade class about Michigan geography. It was so much fun to see how proud the students were of their maps.
