ELA
This year for ELA students will participate in the “EL Education.” EL Education is a curriculum places emphasis on active learning and student engagement. Classrooms are structured with highly collaborative activities that allow students to engage in academic conversations and investigations of rich academic topics. EL aims to contribute to a student’s ability to be globally competitive and active contributors in building a better world. This curriculum has students learning about 4 major topics (modules) throughout the year. During each module students will be reading, writing, and participating in rich conversations about the topic. The four modules students will be learning about are:
Quarter 1 - Overcoming learning challenges near and far: Students launch the year by building their close reading skills; they hear stories read aloud, read works in their entirety, and read more challenging excerpts closely. Through stories, they consider the challenges students face with access to books and education around the world, and how geography and where one lives in the world affect how one accesses books.
Quarter 2 - Adaptations and the Wide World of Frogs: In this module, students use literacy skills to become experts—people who use reading, writing, listening, and speaking to build and share deep knowledge about a topic.
Quarter 3 - Exploring Literary Classics: What can we learn from reading literary classics? In this module, students consider the answer to this question through a book study of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie.
Quarter 4 - Water Conservation: This module focuses on the importance of clean freshwater around the world. Students will build background knowledge about freshwater around the world and three water issues: access to water, demands on water, and water pollution. They gather evidence as they research in order to write an opinion essay about the importance of water conservation.
